The NFL is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2019, and there are plenty of notable and historic matchups throughout the season, starting with the Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears on Thursday night, September 5. To commemorate this momentous season, we gathered a collection of can’t-miss 2019 matchups with historical significance and high stakes. Check out the list below.
Week 1 (Sept. 5): Green Bay Packers at Chicago Bears
The 2019 season kickoff renews the NFL’s oldest rivalry, which began in 1921. The Packers hold the all-time series edge with a 96-94-6 record. Will the Bears squad tip the scales closer to even, or will Aaron Rodgers widen the gap?
Week 2 (Sept. 16): Cleveland Browns at New York Jets
This one is a throwback to the first-ever Monday Night Football matchup. That game saw the Browns defeat the Jets 31-21 on September 21, 1970.
Week 3 (Sept. 22): Dallas Cowboys at Miami Dolphins
These two teams squared off in Super Bowl VI in New Orleans. The Cowboys took the championship with a 24-3 win over the Dolphins.
Week 4 (Sept. 29): Los Angeles Chargers at Miami Dolphins
These two teams played in the 1982 AFC Divisional Round and provided one of the most thrilling games in NFL history. The Chargers ultimately pulled out a 41-38 win in overtime, and San Diego quarterback Dan Fouts completed 33 of 53 passes for 433 yards and three touchdowns for the win.
Week 5 (Oct. 6): Buffalo Bills at Tennessee Titans
Ever heard of the Music City Miracle? With 16 seconds remaining in the game and the Titans down 16-15, fullback Lorenzo Neal fielded a short kickoff and handed the ball off to tight end Frank Wychek. He took a few steps before stopping, and then turned his body to throw a lateral across the field to uncovered wide receiver Kevin Dyson, who raced 75 yards down the sideline for the game-winning touchdown.
Week 6 (Oct. 10): New York Giants at New England Patriots
These two teams faced each other in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, and Eli Manning’s Giants won both games over Tom Brady’s Patriots. The first of the two Super Bowl wins stopped the Patriots from becoming the second undefeated team in NFL history.
Week 7 (Oct. 20): Oakland Raiders at Green Bay Packers
Two of the NFL’s most storied franchises met in Super Bowl II. The Packers won a second straight championship, defeating the Raiders, 33-14.
Week 8 (Oct. 27): Green Bay Packers at Kansas City Chiefs
The Packers won the first-ever Super Bowl championship against the Chiefs in Super Bowl I. The present-day matchup will feature a Sunday Night Football game between quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes in what will surely be a legendary shootout.
Week 9 (Nov. 3): Minnesota Vikings at Kansas City Chiefs
These two teams met in Super Bowl IV, when the Chiefs secured their first and only Super Bowl win behind Hank Stram’s famous “65 Toss Power Trap” play.
Week 10 (Nov. 10): Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints
These two clubs are bitter rivals, but the Saints’ victory on September 25, 2006 was especially emotional with the reopening of the Superdome following the city-wide devastation from Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Week 11 (Nov. 17): New England Patriots at Philadelphia Eagles
The Patriots and Eagles met in Super Bowls XXXIX and LII, and split the matchups. The last meeting showcased the “Philly Special” and ended with an Eagles win behind backup QB Nick Foles.
Week 12 (Nov. 24): Oakland Raiders at New York Jets
It may have been a sign of the times, but the matchup between these two teams on November 17, 1968 was cut short to show the film Heidi with 1:05 remaining in a close game. Fans were furious at the time. It’s a safe bet that this probably won’t ever happen again.
Week 13 (Dec. 1): San Francisco 49ers at Baltimore Ravens
The 49ers and Ravens met in Super Bowl XLVII, and it featured brother versus brother (Jim and John Harbaugh) on opposing sidelines along with a now-infamous power blackout.
Week 14 (Dec. 8): Cincinnati Bengals at Cleveland Browns
It’s the annual Battle of Ohio, which has the Bengals leading the all-time series, 50-41. Maybe the new-look Browns will add a couple of wins this year.
Week 15 (Dec. 16): Indianapolis Colts at New Orleans Saints
This Monday Night Football matchup includes the two teams that met in Super Bowl XLIV. From head coach Sean Payton successfully calling an onside kick to open the second half, to cornerback Tracy Porter’s game-clinching 74-yard pick-six, this game produced many memorable moments as the Saints marched on to secure their first championship.
Week 16 (Dec. 21): Oakland Raiders at Los Angeles Chargers
The 1978 matchup produced the infamous “Holy Roller,” and the result changed the NFL’s rule for an offense’s ability to advance recovered fumbles. In that game, Raiders quarterback Ken Stabler avoided a sack by throwing the football forward toward the goal line. Running back Pete Banaszak touched the ball, then used both hands to push it forward. Tight end Dave Casper then recovered the ball in the end zone to give the Raiders a stunning 21-20 win.
Week 17 (Dec. 29): Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions
The Packers-Lions rivalry started all the way back in 1930. They have the longest continuously running rivalry in the NFL with 179 meetings, including Thanksgiving and postseason matchups. They have been division rivals since 1933, and Green Bay leads the all-time series 100-72-7.
