Iconic San Diego Venue: The Observatory North Park

The Observatory North Park History

One of San Diego’s most stunning and intimate venues, the theater now known as The Observatory North Park has long been an entertainment hub for the North Park community. The historic spot on University Ave. opened in 1929 as the North Park Theatre, and was a popular movie house for over 60 years. In 2005, the building went through renovations and began hosting theatrical productions, symphonies and concerts. In 2015, owners of the Orange County venue The Observatory took it over. They removed the permanent seating to accommodate for more live music events and have since filled the schedule with rock, pop and indie shows.

The Observatory North Park Performers

The Observatory has brought in a constant flow of artists — both on-the-rise and well-established. The venue largely caters to indie rock fans, with bands like Tame Impala, Sleater-Kinney and Death Cab for Cutie giving memorable performances here. But the theater has welcomed talents across genres, including modern soul crooners Michael Kiwanuka and Leon Bridges and hip-hop stars Lupe Fiasco and Travis Scott.
