Punch Line Comedy Club San Francisco History
One of the best and most beloved rooms in American comedy, the Punch Line Comedy Club San Francisco remains a premier venue for great live stand-up. Opened in 1978 in what had been a dressing room for the neighboring rock club The Old Waldorf, it soon became a favorite haunt for comics and comedy fans as well as a place to catch stars in the making. San Francisco’s longest running and only full-time comedy club, it’s part of a family of venues that includes a sister club in Sacramento and Cobb’s Comedy Club in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood.
Punch Line Comedy Club San Francisco Performers
Many of comedy’s greatest performers found a warm home on the Punch Line’s stage both before and after becoming big names. Dave Chappelle has played the club regularly since the early ‘90s, performing some of his longest sets here (one lasted over six hours). Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Carey, Wanda Sykes and Chris Rock all honed their skills here. Hannibal Buress, Amy Schumer, Bill Burr and Marc Maron are among the next generation of comics who slayed at the Punch Line, with many of their peers returning for guest appearances and surprise sets alongside the latest wave of rising talents.
