Tabernacle History

More than half a century after opening as a Baptist church in 1911, downtown Atlanta’s Tabernacle was converted into a concert hall in 1996. First known as the House of Blues (1996-97), the Tabernacle — now owned and managed by Live Nation Entertainment — has brought some of the world’s most exciting acts to the city’s Centennial Olympic Park district for over two decades, even surviving extensive damage from a tornado in 2008.

The stately brick structure held its first concert as the House of Blues in late July 1996, when Chicago’s infamous Blues Brothers — then Dan Aykroyd, Jim Belushi and John Goodman — graced the stage. Since then, the Tabernacle has seen artists like James Brown, Bob Dylan, Adele, Kendrick Lamar and Prince, and stand-up comics like Bob Saget, Lisa Lampanelli and Dave Chappelle. Conan O’Brien even did a week of Conan on the road at the venue in 2013.
