Brooklyn Nets vs. Philadelphia 76ers Series History

The rivalry between the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers dates back to the American Basketball Association (ABA) merger into the NBA. In 1976, the New Jersey Nets were the reigning ABA champions, led by hall-of-famer Julius “Dr. J” Irving. With demonstrated success, a roster that could compete with any team in either league, and fan support, the Nets were one of four teams to be accepted into the NBA as part of the merger.

However, because the Nets were in the same market as the New York Knicks, they had to pay a $4.8 million “encroachment fee” as part of the terms. In order to make this payment, the Nets sold Irving’s contract to the Philadelphia 76ers. As a result, the 76ers went on to win the NBA Finals the next year and the Nets won the fewest games in the league. There has been ill will between the two clubs since then.

The Nets and the 76ers have also met three times in the NBA playoffs. The 76ers won the first matchup in 1979, an Eastern Conference First Round sweep, and the most recent series in 2019, a gentleman’s sweep in the Eastern Conference First Round. The Nets got the best of the 76ers in 1984 when they won four out of five in the Eastern Conference First Round.

Fuel was added to the fire that burned within the rivalry in 2021 when the Nets and 76ers traded fellow disgruntled All-NBA guards. Ben Simmons was shipped to Brooklyn, and the 76ers got James Harden in return.

Where Do the Brooklyn Nets and the Philadelphia 76ers Play?

The Brooklyn Nets play at the Barclays Center in the heart of Brooklyn. As one of the newest, and most state-of-the-art arenas in the NBA, Barclays opened in 2012 and plays host for both the Nets and the WNBA New York Liberty. Barclays Center has a capacity of 17,732.

Meanwhile, the Philadelphia 76ers play at Wells Fargo Center in the southwest corner of the Philadelphia Sports Complex which also includes Lincoln Financial Field and Citizens Bank Park, homes of the Philadelphia Eagles and the Phillies, respectively. Wells Fargo Center has been home of the 76ers since 1996 when it was originally named Corestates Center.
