The history of the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers rivalry began in 1996 with the creation of the Baltimore Ravens following an event known as “The Move.” The event referred to as “The Move” occurred when NFL team owner of the Cleveland Browns, Art Modell, agreed to suspend the Browns in exchange for a new stadium in Baltimore, despite being offered one by the city leaders. Due to the unique circumstances of the Baltimore Ravens creation, the team inherited the Browns’ rivalry with the Steelers. Despite winning the first game between the two in 1996 with a score of 31–17, the Steelers were swiftly upset that same year with a Ravens victory, also at 31–17.

Between the years 2002 and 2007, the two teams came up even, with a record of 6–6. When asked about the intense rivalry between the two teams in 2006, Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward was quoted as saying, “The coaches hate each other, the players hate each other.” In 2008 the rivalry began to reach a fever pitch in a series of three games, including the AFC Championship game, all of which were won by the Pittsburgh Steelers. One year later in 2009, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was quoted as saying, “There’s people on both teams that genuinely don’t like each other.”

While the two rival teams had many classic games throughout the 2010s, their most legendary matchup of the decade came in 2016, on Christmas Day. While the Ravens initially gained a 20–10 lead, Steelers running back Le’Veon Bell swiftly reversed the circumstances with two back-to-back touchdowns. Not content to let the match be merely interesting, the Ravens once more took the lead with 1:18 seconds remaining. With the stakes raised again, Roethlisberger made seven completions and set up a game-winning touchdown for Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown, with only four seconds left in the game to spare and winning the division title. Pittsburgh Steelers fans have since dubbed the miraculous display of athletics, “The Immaculate Extension.” The end of the 2010s saw the Ravens come out on top in head-to-head wins.

On January 27, 2022, Roethlisberger announced his retirement from the NFL after 18 seasons playing for the Steelers, signaling the end of an era for the team. In the series of 58 total games played against one another, the Steelers currently have the upper hand on the Ravens leading 33–25.
