Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints History

There is a stark contrast in history between the Panthers and Saints that adds an element to their rivalry that not many teams share. The New Orleans Saints have been in the NFL since 1967, while the Panthers played their first season in 1995. Despite this contrast in legacy, both teams have shared relatively similar levels of success. Entering the 2023 season, the Panthers have six divisional championships, compared to the Saints’ nine. While New Orleans did win the Super Bowl in 2009, the Panthers have made two Super Bowl appearances (2003 and 2015).

Additionally, the rivalry between the Panthers and Saints has 57 installments of play, with the Saints narrowly holding a margin of total victories, 29-28. Each squad shares the same largest margin of victory (32) over the other, with the Panthers beating the Saints 45-13 in 2000 and the Saints returning the favor 42-10 in 2019. The longest win streak is also nominal between the two franchises, with the Panthers holding two streaks of four consecutive victories, eclipsed by the Saints’ five straight wins from 2000–2002.

From 1995 to 2010, the Panthers had a stranglehold over the Saints, winning 17 of their 30 matchups. This was in large part due to the sustained success of head coach John Fox, quarterback Jake Delhomme, receiver Steve Smith Sr., and running backs Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. The Panthers also had a star-studded defense powered by a dominant front seven.

However, the Saints turned the tide in 2006 with the acquisition of MVP and future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees, who played 14 seasons in New Orleans, won a Super Bowl in 2009, and rewrote both single season and career records at the position. Still, the Panthers did not roll over and accept defeat. With an MVP of their own in quarterback Cam Newton, the Panthers remained competitive against the Saints and made it to the Super Bowl in 2015, though they lost to the Seattle Seahawks.

Where Do the New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers Play?

The home of the New Orleans Saints is the Caesars Superdome. While it is one of the older stadiums in the NFL, the Superdome is iconic, having hosted Super Bowl championships, NCAA Final Four games, Monster Jam and even Wrestlemania. The Superdome has a maximum capacity of 76,468 for football, but a record attendance of 78,133 in April of 2018 for WrestleMania 34.

Located in uptown Charlotte, North Carolina, Bank of America Stadium plays host to the Carolina Panthers. BoA Stadium opened in the summer of 1996 and can host up to 75,525 occupants for a Panthers home game. The stadium originally cost $248 million to construct, but the Panthers have financed renovations over each of the last three years to improve the stadium atmosphere and quality of experience.
