Both the Jets and the Dolphins were established in the 1960s in the American Football League. When the AFL merged with the NFL in 1970, both franchises joined the AFC East and they’ve played twice a year since then. The Jets won the first eight games in a row against Miami from 1966–1969 by an average margin of 15.9 points per game.

During the ’70s, the Dolphins went on a dominant run behind hall of fame running backs Larry Csonka and Jim Kiick, and quarterback Bob Griese.
