In 1978, a play known by Eagles fans as “The Miracle at the Meadowlands,” or “The Fumble” by Giants fans, occurred when the Giants had the ball with a 17-12 lead with 20 seconds remaining. The Giants called a running play and the handoff between quarterback Joe Pisarcik and running back Larry Csonka was fumbled. Eagles defensive back Herman Edwards scooped up the loose ball and returned it for the winning score, 19-17.

In 1981, the two teams met in the NFC Wild Card with the Eagles hosting. The Giants took an early 20-0 lead in the first quarter. They then held off a late Philadelphia rally to win 27-21.

The two teams met again in the playoffs in the 2006 NFC Wild Card Game. The Eagles led by 10 points in the fourth quarter, and a touchdown pass from Giants quarterback Eli Manning to Plaxico Burress tied the game 20-20 with just over five minutes remaining. Eagles quarterback Jeff Garcia led a game-winning drive capped off by a David Akers field goal as time expired to win 23-20.

The rivalry between the Giants and Eagles began in 1933 with the founding of the Eagles. The two franchises were dominant in the early days of the NFL, particularly in the ’40s and ’50s, when the two teams would compete for postseason berths and division titles. Because of the intensity and how long the two teams have played, it’s considered one of the biggest rivalries in the NFL.

The late ’50s and early ’60s saw the Giants take the league by storm with five appearances in the NFL Championship between 1958–1963. 1960 was the lone year the Giants didn’t make it, and the Eagles won that year.

From 1975–1981, the Eagles won 12 straight games in the series, including a berth to Super Bowl XV in 1981. The Giants went on to hire Bill Parcells in 1983, and he led the Giants to victory with wins in Super Bowl XXI and XXV.
