Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings History
The Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings rivalry started when the Vikings entered the NFL in 1961. The rivalry started after the Vikings defeated the Bears in their debut game 37-13. As of the 2022 season, the Vikings are currently ahead 65-57-2 overall for all games played against the Bears. Surprisingly, the Bears and Vikings have only met once in the NFL Playoffs — in the 1994 NFC Wildcard game, which the Bears won 35-18. The rivalry between these two teams comes from both the Bears and the Vikings being a part of the NFC North Division. Being in the same division means these two teams play each other at least twice a year in hotly contested games to try to win a spot in the NFL Playoffs.
The Bears vs. Vikings rivalry has had many key moments throughout its more than 50-year history. Between 1972–1976 the Vikings crushed the Bears with eight straight victories. This happened again in the 1980s when the Bears defeated the Vikings in six straight games between 1983 and 1986. The 1985 season saw “McMahon’s Miracle,” when Bears quarterback Jim McMahon convinced head Coach Mike Ditka to let him back in the game after an injury. McMahon then led the Bears first to a dramatic comeback in the second half of the game to give the Bears the victory over the Vikings, then to their legendary Super Bowl XX win that season.
The teams remained competitive during the 1990s and 2000s. The 2018 season saw the contention rise again amongst the Bears and Vikings as the Bears knocked the Vikings out of the NFL Playoffs during a week 17 victory. The Vikings have the upper hand on the Bears going into the 2023 season, as they have defeated the Bears in their previous four contests.
The rivalry remains strong between the Minnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears as the teams’ seemingly never-ending battle for Midwest supremacy rages on.
