Rockin’ in Charm City: Baltimore’s Top Concert Venues

Good morning, Baltimore! As the largest city in Maryland, Baltimore boasts a population of more than 500,000 residents — a number that grows to just shy of 3 million people when accounting for its greater metropolitan area. With a lively, bustling culture stretching from the harbors of the Patapsco River to just north of Washington D.C., the city and its surrounding metropolis are home to a plethora of live music venues — from large arenas to intimate clubs and everything in between.

Pier Six Pavilion

Built in 1981 on Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Pier Six Pavilion was originally a temporary structure known as Harbor Lights Concert Pavilion. Open May through September, Pier Six has been home to some of the city’s best summer concerts for nearly 35 years. With a capacity of 4,600, the venue has been home to a diverse roster of outdoor shows by the likes of Al Green, Diana Ross, Etta James, Willie Nelson, Tracy Chapman, Johnny Cash, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steely Dan and Ray Charles.

The Fillmore Silver Spring

Located in downtown Silver Spring just outside Washington D.C., The Fillmore Silver Spring is a beloved live music venue that opened in 2011. Largely a general admission room with space for 2,000 fans, The Fillmore Silver Spring has hosted intimate headlining shows ranging from Mary J. Blige and John Legend to Imagine Dragons, Machine Gun Kelly, and Burna Boy.

Baltimore Soundstage

Box office hours: Wednesday to Saturday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during all shows

Relatively newer than many of the other music venues in the greater Baltimore area, Baltimore Soundstage opened over Labor Day 2011 just off the Inner Harbor, following the closure of the nightclub Bourbon Street. The club can accommodate multiple seating configurations, ranging from a capacity of 1,000 attendees while standing to 500 fully seated. Rising artists from Sexyy Red and Kiana Ledé to Noahfinnce and Teddy Swims have all introduced themselves to Baltimore fans by making tour stops at the Soundstage.

The Lyric Baltimore

In the heart of downtown Baltimore near the University of Baltimore School of Law, The Lyric is one of the oldest and most historic venues in the city. Founded in 1894 as The Music Hall, the ornate building was modeled after the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and has been home to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and now-defunct Baltimore Opera Company as well as more than a century of touring performances by the Metropolitan Opera.

Over the years, the venue’s name has changed from the Lyric Opera House (1909-2010) to The Patricia and Arthur Modell Performing Arts Center at the Lyric (2010-2021) to its simpler present-day incarnation. In 1967, The Doors famously played at the 2,564-seat hall while Patti Labelle sold out five nights at the Lyric in 1984. Other notable artists who’ve graced the stage at the Lyric include Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa, Alice Cooper, Pink Floyd and Peter Gabriel.

CFG Bank Arena

CFG Bank Arena is a multipurpose arena owned by the City of Baltimore. Located on the corner of Baltimore Street and Hopkins Place in downtown Baltimore, the arena officially opened in October 1962 as the Baltimore Civic Center. In 2023, the 14,000-seat concert venue was ranked the tenth highest-grossing venue worldwide in its category, according to reporting by Billboard.

As one of the biggest Baltimore concert venues, the arena regularly draws major tours to Baltimore including those by Janet Jackson, Lizzo, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Céline Dion, The Who, Jonas Brothers, and Fleetwood Mac.
