Arizona Cardinals vs. Chicago Bears History
The Chicago Bears and the Arizona Cardinals have a historic rivalry that dates all the way back to 1920. In the inaugural 1920 season, the Decatur Staleys (Chicago Bears) and the Chicago Cardinals (Arizona Cardinals) became instant rivals due to being members of the original NFL as well as both teams being based in Chicago. The 1920 season saw the Cardinals and Bears winning one game each. In an amazing feat of defense, after the first game between the Cardinals and Bears (Cardinals winning 7-6), the next 17 games saw either the Bears or the Cardinals end the game with zero points. Both teams wouldn’t score against the other until the 1929 matchup, which saw the Cardinals beat the Bears 40-6. This game also set an NFL record for most points made by a single player in a game by Hall of Famer Ernie Nevers, who scored all 40 points for the Cardinals.
The early rivalry was intense, with the first five seasons seeing the teams evenly matched at 4-4-2 and both teams winning an NFL Championship. However, the Bears’ power eventually outmatched the Cardinals, with the Bears going 33-6-4 from 1926–1946. The Cardinals and Bears played each other every year from 1920 up until the Chicago Cardinals’ move to St. Louis in 1959. This is when the rivalry began to wane.
With an overall record of 581-790-41, the Cardinals have zero Super Bowl wins and only two NFL Championships after more than 100 years in the league. To this day, the Bears have the upper hand in the series, with a record of 57-29-6. Though these teams have never played each other in the playoffs and the rivalry is stale, they’ve still had some memorable matchups. Along with Nevers’ 40-point game, the Cardinals set an NFL record when Cardinals quarterback Pat Coffee threw a 97-yard touchdown pass to Gaynell Tinsley in 1937. One of the biggest moments in (somewhat) recent memory was the 1986 preseason brawl between the Bears and the Cardinals. This brawl, which included punching, stomping and overall chaos, resulted in players receiving more than 50 fines. Another key moment in recent memory was the 2006 Bears comeback, when they overcame a 20-point deficit at half time to beat the Cardinals 24-23.
