Atlanta Falcons vs. Carolina Panthers History
Carolina and Atlanta have shared a relatively similar level of success in the NFL, with each team winning the NFC South six times, and both teams representing the NFC in the Super Bowl twice. Atlanta made the Super Bowl in 2016 behind the stellar play of MVP quarterback Matt Ryan; however, the Falcons are notorious for blowing the largest lead in Super Bowl history, 28-3, to Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.
Carolina met a similar fate in 2003, losing to Brady, Bill Belichick and the Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII. The Panthers would claim the NFC again in 2015 behind MVP quarterback play of their own, Cam Newton, but lost to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50.
Carolina’s first regular season game in franchise history was against the Falcons, a 23-20 overtime loss in 1995. Carolina would retaliate later that season, beating Atlanta 21-17 and securing their seventh win that season, the most ever in an inaugural season for an expansion franchise, and so the rivalry was born.
In 2002, both teams were moved to the NFC South as a part of division realignment in the NFL, and Atlanta won 9 of the first 10 divisional games against Carolina. The Panthers’ only win against Atlanta during that run was in 2003, the year they made their first Super Bowl. One notable game between the two franchises came in 2014, when Carolina traveled to Atlanta in Week 17 for a de facto playoff game. The winner would win the NFC South and receive an automatic berth to the Playoffs, and the loser would have their season ended. Carolina dominated Atlanta, 34-3. While their playoff run was cut short, it paved the way for a 15-1 regular season a year later and a Super Bowl run.
Where Do the Carolina Panthers and Atlanta Falcons Play?
The Atlanta Falcons play in the newly minted Mercedes-Benz Stadium. Known for its signature retractable roof and an octagonal “pinwheel,” Mercedes-Benz Stadium is an architectural marvel and one of the newest stadiums in the NFL. Outside of being the home of the Falcons, the stadium also hosts the MLS franchise, Atlanta United FC, the NCAA Peach Bowl, and the SEC Championship Game, and is expected to host matches for the 2025 FIFA World Cup.
Bank of America Stadium has been the home of the Carolina Panthers since 1996. Formerly called Ericsson Stadium, BofA purchased the naming rights in 2004 for 25 years. The Stadium has a maximum capacity of 74,867 and also hosts a number of signature college football games like the ACC Championship Game, the Duke’s Mayo Bowl and the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Classic. Charlotte FC also calls Bank of America Stadium their home.
