Buffalo Bills vs. New York Jets History
The Bills and Jets rivalry first began in 1960 when both teams were part of the start-up American Football League. Both teams joined the NFL as part of the AFL-NFL merger, and have been part of the AFC East ever since.
The early rivalry saw short winning streaks going to each franchise. The Jets were an early powerhouse in the AFL, winning the 1968 Super Bowl, behind the arm of star quarterback Joe Namath.
The mid-’80s saw a dominant stretch by the Jets, with the team winning eight straight games from 1984 until the streak was snapped during the 1987 season in a 17-14 loss to Buffalo.
That win for Buffalo led to a streak of dominance through the late ’90s, during which the Bills won 18 games in the series compared to just three for the Jets. This stretch included a 10-game winning streak for the Bills from 1987 until the 1992 season.
The late ’00s were some of the best in Jets franchise history, with New York controlling the AFC East and the rivalry. The Jets would win eight of nine games between 2008 and 2012.
Recently, the Bills have been one of the most dominant teams in the NFL. A young core led by quarterback Josh Allen has led a prolific offense, but one of the most stunning upsets in the rivalry took place in the 2022 season when the Jets beat the Bills 20-17 behind a stout defensive performance.
