While they do not play in the same division, since both the Saints and the Vikings are in the National Football Conference (NFC), they play in the regular season every three years. Additionally, the Saints and the Vikings have squared off nearly a half-dozen times in the NFL Playoffs, adding more intensity to the rivalry.

The Minnesota Vikings arrived in the NFL in 1961, and have developed several rivals within the NFL. New Orleans Saints vs. Minnesota Vikings History

Despite playing their first game against one another more than 50 years ago, the Vikings and Saints have only squared off 37 times between 1968 and 2022. With the Vikings historically dominating the series, 24–13 in the all-time head-to-head, one would question whether this is truly a rivalry. However, with the Saints resurgence to elite status throughout the 2000s under former head coach Sean Payton and quarterback Drew Brees, the rivalry has been renewed.

The Saints won the first contest of this rivalry, 20–17, but the Vikings would go on a run of dominance over the next 40 years, winning 20 out of the next 27 matchups. Since 2010, though, the Saints have grabbed the series momentum, winning five out of the last nine. Perhaps the most memorable game in this series occurred in the 2017 Divisional Round, dubbed the “Minneapolis Miracle.” The hometown Vikings scored the game’s first 17 points to take a commanding lead. However, Brees and company roared back to take a 24–23 lead with less than a minute to play in regulation. Then Vikings quarterback Case Keenum threw a prayer to All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who caught the ball and evaded Saints safety Marcus Williams, who attempted a diving tackle with his head down. There was no other defender to impede Diggs, who strutted into the endzone for a walk-off touchdown as time expired.

Three years later, on Christmas Day, the Saints got their revenge behind a record NFL performance from All-Pro running back Alvin Kamara. The Saints were ahead 31–27 in a close match after three quarters, but in the final 15 minutes of play, the Saints pulled away scoring 21 points to end the game 52–33. Kamara tallied six touchdowns and the loss eliminated the Vikings from playoff contention that season.

Where Do the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings Play?

Caesars Superdome (formerly the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and the Louisiana Superdome) is the home of the New Orleans Saints. As one of the oldest stadiums in the league, the Superdome was opened in August 1975, costing roughly $134 million. However, renovations took place after repairs became necessary from Hurricane Katrina that cost an additional $193 million in 2006. Up to 76,468 fans can attend a football game in the Caesars Superdome, however, the record attendance is 78,133 for Wrestlemania XXXIV in April 2018.

Since 2016, the Minnesota Vikings have called U.S. Bank Stadium their home. Located in downtown Minneapolis, U.S. Bank Stadium is an architectural marvel that has also played host to college baseball games played by the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers, the 2019 NCAA Final Four, Super Bowl LII, and the Summer X Games. U.S Bank Stadium has drawn comparisons to Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, for it’s transparent rolls, walls and largest rotating doors.
