New York Mets vs. New York Yankees Subway Series History
The Mets and Yankees have a relatively short playing history against one another compared to the teams’ marquee rivalries with other teams. The two squads first squared off in June of 1997, where the Mets beat the Yankees at Yankee Stadium 6–0. Between 1997 and 2022, they’ve met a total of 134 times, with the Yankees edging out the series lead 80–59.
The Yankees and Mets collided in postseason play in 2000 for the first and only Subway World Series, where the Yankees — led by Derek Jeter, Dwight Gooden and Roger Clemens powered past the Mets 4–1 to capture the title.
Controversy struck during that series at the conclusion of game two when Clemens and Mets catcher Mike Piazza had an altercation. Clemens hit Piazza with a pitch during an earlier game that season that landed Piazza on the Disabled List with a concussion. In game two, Piazza splintered a bat on a ball that was fouled off, with a portion going over the pitcher’s head. Clemens grabbed a large piece of the bat and hurled it towards the baseline and dugout, nearly hitting Piazza and spurning a benches-clearing brawl.
The Yankees won the game 6–5, but the Mets bounced back in game three— their only win of the series.
