MLS 2019 Soccer Season Kickoff
Major League Soccer is back, and fandom is at an all-time fever pitch. As teams gain momentum in their locales, and even more are set to debut in major cities moving forward, there’s never been a better time to claim a North American football club as your own. How long is the MLS season?
Each MLS club will play 34 games. Teams will face their conference opponent twice during the season, and non-conference opponents once.
Are any teams opening new stadiums? Which ones and when?
FC Cincinnati is new to the league this season and will play their first regular season home game at Nippert Stadium on March 17th vs. Portland Timbers.
Minnesota United’s Allianz Field opens on April 13th vs. NYC FC.
Portland Timbers’ Providence Park will re-open on June 1 following renovations vs. LAFC.
To note, Inter Miami and Nashville SC will join the league in 2020, as well as Austin FC in 2021.
When and where is the MLS All-Star Game?
The MLS All-Star Game will be hosted by Orlando City on March 31st.
Is there a break in the regular season?
Yes: the league will break from June 21st – 24th for the opening week of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, which occurs every two years and determines the continental soccer champion across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.
When will last year’s championship teams face each other this season?
ATL United and Portland Timbers rematch on August 18th at Providence Park.
How many teams will head to the MLS playoffs this year?
14 teams will qualify for the playoffs instead of 12.
